Any way to use firewire to transfer media to FCP while using RS-422 deck control, ala DSR-1500
Posted by Paul Harb on October 26, 2005 at 11:49 pmIm using a Sony DSR-1500 and I cannot get deck control using firewire, from what Ive read, you CANT use firewire as deck control using this deck….the logic behind this is beyond me…..but hey its Sony…..so, my next question is can I use RS-422 as deck control while using firewire to transfer the media to master a DV timeline to tape? This is really killing me that a $6000 deck will not let you use firewire to control the deck….what is the point, can anyone explain this?

October 27, 2005 at 12:29 amI’m not sure what you are asking.
Log & Capture works perfectly using the Sony DSR-1500 (a.k.a. deck control)
Edit to Tape/Assemble Edit works perfectly using the Sony DSR-1500 (a.k.a. deck control)
Print to Video works perfectly using the Sony DSR-1500 (a.k.a. deck control)
You will need a USB to Serial adapter like the Keyspan usb/serial adapter for RS-422 control. You will need to go to the audio video device controls settings in FPC to make sure you are pointed at the correct device control protocol.
Inquiring minds…

Isn’t there a menu setting on the 1500 to switch deck control from RS-422 to Firewire?
Folks are using Firewire all the time to control the 1500 so something is wrong on your end.

Yeah, just use the Easy Setup for DV-NTSC and change your deck control to RS-422 Sony.

October 27, 2005 at 2:10 amThere was a DSR-1500, which offered the firewire card as an option, and the later model the DSR-1500A, which made that option standard.
If you don’t have the firewire card and you have the old model, perhaps you can’t control vis firewire until you add the optional card.
If you have the firewire option, then you can definitely use firewire for machine control. It’s under SETUP MENU, then INTERFACE SELECT, then REMOTE I/F, then select i.LINK.

October 27, 2005 at 3:42 amThere are known, well documented issues with firewire and the Sony DSR1500, do a search, Im actually pretty savy with settings, so…..I have a Keyspan USB to serial converter, I was going to try and use RS-422 to control the deck, and use firewire to send the video/audio….I didnt have a huge amount of time to set it up correctly today, but I was still having issues, will tackle it again tomorrow. I just read tonight here, doing a search on DSR 1500 issues, that someone else switched the firewire option card(which we have, it is an older model I believe), to another slot in the deck I think, and then someone else said they went out and bought a firewire PCI card and installed that and the problem was solved…..so maybe Im not so nuts…

October 27, 2005 at 3:44 amHey Walter,
Ya, i didnt have a huge amount of time to set it all up, and I do believe there is a setting in the deck menu to pick firewire. I believe this is an older DSR1500 and we have the firewire option card, which Ive read alot of problems with, do a search here on DSR 1500 and youll get tons of documentation on this issue….I will go back in tomorrow and play with it some more….

October 30, 2005 at 8:49 amNot DSR-1500 related, but I was told by my Apple rep and by Niche video in Atlanta to never use Apple’s built in firewire for both drives and capture, so I added a pci firewire card from the start. Don’t know if that applies if you don’t use firewire drives.
Also, I’ve read in several places that RS-422 deck control is less problematic than firewire deck control, no matter the deck. I’ve read on here where people with sync issues have fixed them by switching to RS-422. Unfortunatly, I can’t quote them exactly, and I’m not speaking from experience. I just took their advice and I use firewire for capture, but with RS-422 control all the time. BTW, I have the decklink card which has RS-422 built in.
Thanks,
Gary
