  • Any Way to Improve Vocals Recorded Slightly Too Hot?

Posted by Scott Clements on July 9, 2013 at 3:55 pm

    Hi,

I’m wondering if there’s any way in Audition (or FCP or Soundtrack Pro) that anyone knows of to take the edge off vocals recorded too hot. They’re not massively distorted but have an annoying sharpness to them. The trained ear can tell they’re too hot, but this is how they were recorded. I’m not too experienced with audio, so don’t know if there’s a suitable solution. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Scott –

I don’t know what your clipping resulted from (maybe AGC on a DSLR), but here’s a video from Adobe TV showing how to restore clipped audio:

Bear in mind that if it’s really badly clipped (much over 0dB), you may not be able to restore it. But using Jason Levine’s methods, you can at least find out whether it’s restorable. Good luck.

In Audition, there is a “Reduce Harshness” filter, though I can’t say exactly where. I always have a hard time finding it and ought to write it down somewhere, is under one of the Equalizer settings I think. Haven’t tried it with vocals, but helped with loud DJs/bands.

    Thanks

Thanks, guys! I’ll give both of those a whirl tomorrow and see how it goes.
