    Hi everyone

I offer a service to convert video to dvd for people and I often receive videos from customers around 3-4 hours in length which requires that I contact them and explain the need to go to two discs. I have decided to now look into dual layer discs, but before i head down this path, wanted to know if Encore can now perform this task without too much trouble? The last thing I want is for discs to not play because they are now dual layer.

I do not need complex menus and in fact, most discs I make do not have menus and would be purely videos with chapter markers.

Im on an i7 2.8ghz imac with a dual layer burner if that helps.

If it’s a risk, then Im happy to stay with simple DVDs

    Thanks a lot

    Anybody?

I’m after successful occurrences as these forums are generally for people who have problems.

    Thanks

Encore can make dual layer DVDs with no problem, not really different that making a single layer. If you are burning from your computer make sure your burner can do dual layer discs. Also, with Encore you cannot choose the Break Point where it switches from one layer to the next. When you watch the video there will be a one second pause when it switches. If you want control over the location of that point, for example to put it in a fade to black or a static image, you need other software.

Thanks for your response. My machine is capable of DL burning.

Of particular interest is in the ability of these DL discs to play on a variety of dvd players? I would hate to give it to a client and learn that it wont work.

    Thanks again for your feedback

Pretty much all DVD players will play dual layer discs, unless they are really, really old, like first generation players. Most of the movies people rent today are on dual layer DVDs. People just don’t really notice the one second pause when it switches or they think it’s a glitch with their own system.

    Thanks Joe.

One of my very first DVD jobs back in 2005 was a series of 5 DVDs and 200 of each for a karate series i had filmed. My client had presold 82 series’ and I had a reputable company burn these discs. 50% of them failed to play on his customers DVD players. Not wanting to upset my client anymore, i instead paid out of my own pocket for this series to be replicated and upon their return, played flawlessly in each DVD player.

I understand from that experience that commercial dvds (single layer or dual layer) will play fine, but i always fear another mishap from self burned dvds. Having never burned a dual layer from Encore, I wanted to make sure that people like yourself, have had good success

    Thanks a lot

The best advice I can give is not to burn it from Encore. Have it build a disc image, put it on your hard drive and then use another program to burn the actual disc. That has work best for us. But anything of quantity, over 100, we still send out for replication. I think Disc Makers has a guarantee on their discs.
