  • Any secret to dealing with Rendering?

Posted by Jon Boffa on February 10, 2006 at 6:34 am

Ive been using FCP for a few months now and I must ask: is there any way to get around having to constantly keep rendering changes on my timeline? Is there a setting that will automatically render any items that require it? Having to keep selecting the menu option gets to be a pain after a while…

Any input would be much appreciative!

    Thanks,
    JB

Yes there is a setting in the user preferences to automatically render every xx minutes. But IMHO that would be a major PIA if you’re in the middle of cutting something and all of a sudden something starts to render.

if i am working on a render intensive job, i usually just hit render all whenever i take a long break, or grab a bite to eat.

You mean as opposed to Apple+A and render? or are you talking turning off a layer to make changes and losing all the renders on that layer?

next time you go to the menu,

look for the keyboard shortcuts that are next to the commands.

rather than then clicking on the menu command, EXIT the menu,

and use the shortcut you just saw.

do that three times running, and you’ll have learnt the short cut, and not need to go to the menu anymore.

    for starters:
    Render All is Apple R

    Here’s the real secret.
Do not render as you work.

Motion graphics artists never render as they work. Editors have the annoying habit of rendering as they work. The compromise is to preview your work and be confident in your skills. Step through your effect, Use QuickView, RT Extreme or whatever you need to feel confident about your effect without having to render it!.

Only render when you walk away from your FCP Workstation.

    I hope that helps you.
