ANY reports on CS6? Mac, PC?
Posted by Erik Mickelson on May 4, 2012 at 4:31 pmAnyone download the trials and have any comments?
Only 2 days to go to upgrade at the discount. On the Mac side, I see no compelling reason to upgrade just yet. Performance seems the same and I have other plug ins that work just fine for CC. AAF and/or OMF seem to be just as wonky as before. Prelude = no MTS supported metadata. I do like the new 3-way CC. I like the new auto trim tool. I don’t like track selections, still a keystroke drain. Transitions are still junk.
I want to hear from PC users that use a decent GTX Cuda card.

May 4, 2012 at 5:20 pmI’m having really good experiences with CS 6 on the mac.
All the issues I have with CS 5.5 not playing rendered sequences
all the way through is solved with 6.Release date can’t come soon enough.
These are my comments/changes I’d like to see asap:
unrendered playback is fantastic but drifts out of audio sync very quickly.
exported files are in sync. but I’d like the unrendered preview to be in sync.I DO NOT like that omf export still goes through system drive.
If my scratch disk is set for my RAID, I expect EVERY process to
go through the RAID.Since the demo we’ve all been playing with is not the final release,
I’m hoping these will be a non-issue on release day. -

May 4, 2012 at 6:21 pmErik, for context, what sort of work is it that you’re doing?
[Erik Mickelson] ” On the Mac side, I see no compelling reason to upgrade just yet. “
Really? I had a early look at CS6, and I would not go back to CS5.5. Like you, I don’t find that CS6 addresses every single concern I had with CS5.5, but I do find the Pr CS6 experience to be vastly, vastly superior to the Pr CS5.5 experience.
Don’t Stop Playback, adjustment layers, reduced reliance on the work area, good video I/O, new trimming, hover scrub, and the overhauled UI — if you’re an every day Premiere user, I can’t understand why you wouldn’t want to upgrade.
Nearly all of my work is graphics-oriented, so I use Premiere primarily as the hub to tie together a lot of AE comps. AE’s performance is way better in CS6, and I’ve been pretty impressed with Dynamic Link.
[Erik Mickelson] “Transitions are still junk.”
Has Tom given you his speech on Boris RED yet?
[Erik Mickelson] “I want to hear from PC users that use a decent GTX Cuda card.”
I’m running a monster HP Z800 with a Quadro 6000. CUDA/OpenCL is part of the solution, but there’s a lot more to MPE than GPU acceleration. Pr CS6 benefits from a balanced system.

May 4, 2012 at 6:37 pmWalter, you are on a PC, enough said.
I already own and have been trying to sell my Boris Red. It is not a solution and is very cumbersome to implement into a workflow. I also own Continuum and find it much better, it allows you to stay inside the editing program. Continuum is not improving much either though. Transitions are not handled in Premiere effectively, must be the API, or so say developers.
Why I wouldn’t want to upgrade? I do that’s why I have downloaded the trial. I am finding it very clunky on the MacBook Pro. We can’t even get a Quadro 6000 even if we wanted to.
I would rather have reviews that tell exactly what is better and what is working. Most everyone’s response is “it works great”, “unbelievable performance upgrade”. I personally do not see any of these claims on my MacBook Pro…with a riad…on a single stream of MTS footage.

I’m a long-time Mac guy, and I’ve still got several Macs in daily use here, but I’ve started using both platforms side-by-side since there were so many more performance options available on PCs.

I tried to outline the non-performance features I like in CS6 above. I think there are a lot of little things there that add up to a much better overall experience.
Decoding footage happens on the CPU exclusively. Do you have the dual-core or quad-core i7?
I can’t really comment too much more there as I usually cut from intraframe-compressed sources. I’ve cut some H.264 material and it’s been smooth, but I’m on a 12-core workstation.

May 4, 2012 at 7:40 pmOn a 2 GHz quad Mac Pro with 10GB of RAM and a Radeon 5770 GPU.
I had an FX-laden H.264 DSLR sequence that had some serious latency issues when starting playback in CS5.5. Figured it would be a dandy for taking CS6 out for a spin. Instantly (for all intents and purposes) speeds up to real-time playback in CS6. With a noticeably smaller spike in CPU/memory usage, to boot.
