    Howdy everyone.

I’m a small-time freelance editor. I have an iMac and looking to add my Mac Mini to the mix so I can switch over to it while rendering on the iMac, vice versa, etc.

Any suggestions on an inexpensive way to share a drive(s) with both machines? One of my clients has a nice SAN setup via Fiber but I certainly can’t afford anything like that. I rarely work with footage above 1080p so perhaps a sharable Gigabit Ethernet drive solution would be fast enough? Or maybe there’s a way to share a small server between both via Thunderbolt?

Since I’m only needing to share the drive between 2 machines next to each other and not several edit stations on a company-wide network, I’m hoping there’s a solution that won’t break the bank.

    Any input is muchos appreciated!

Give AFP file sharing a try. Should take care of your needs. Here’s how to set up the host:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549?viewlocale=en_US

Select Get Info for a volume on your desktop to share that entire volume.

On the other computer open Finder and pick Go -> Connect to Server
Type in afp://IP address of host computer
Log in, and pick which shares to mount.
