Hi! So I wanted to recreate this whole japanese logo from scratch to train and have some fun.
However, I managed to finish the modeling (creating the shape) successfully, but I got confused when it came to creating and adding materials because no matter how much I try I never get the same look or at least somewhere nearby, so I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out what kind of reflection used here and what kind of lighting added to the scene in what positions and how they are rendered (is it GI, AO or something else)?

I’m using R17, if that helps.

the textures are simple, with more reflection on the red. There is a white luminant object up above which is making the highlights on the text, doesn’t look like it has AO and it wouldn’t necessarily need GI. At least one light fairly ‘face on’ other as needed, I guess.

looks like a very basic illumination, without GI, AO; I’d use just one light from above and a HDRI image in a Sky object for reflections in the red material (cause I see “something” reflected in the red dot, but you could just put a rectangular plane with a white luminance material to mimic a fixture in the ceiling)

Thank you gentlemen for stopping by!

I followed Mr. Jones’ advice and added a Luminance channel with B&W gradient to the red material,
and then, following Mr. Carlevaro’s advice, I added a sky with an HDRI image and this was my final result.

it does not look quite similar to the original one.

Can you please show me your suggested settings with a snapshot?
Cuz I just found out that I’m still a total beginner. 🙁

    Thanks.

Sorry, I did not mean luminance in the red material, like Corrado I was thinking a plane object up above the text with a luminant texture on it to reflect off the rounding of the text.

Yeah, I added that too, but it does not seem to be making any difference as you could see in the last image I provided!

provide the scene file and we can have a go at it

Don’t need luminance on the text, just reflectance to reflect the white of the plane (I tried out a disk as well as the ref image kind of looks like that)

Thanks a million! Now it looks much better!

But I think I have a problem with the caps setting of the “Extrude NURBS”, it doesn’t look like the original,
the original looks like it has some more curves/levels or something!
