Any idea how this effect was done?
Posted by Nathan on September 5, 2006 at 8:58 pmIt kinda looks like a 3d image but then it doesnt. Take a look at this header image. Anyone care to take a swing at how they would go about replicating this effect?

September 5, 2006 at 9:21 pmLooks like stock video footage of whatever those plants are, probably taken from Artbeats or getty, then they added the little eye thing and then Shine on top to give it that shimering light.
They also probably used a displacement map to accentuate the movement.

September 6, 2006 at 2:19 amI don’t know man, but I don’t see any reason why that isn’t 3D. In fact, the more I look at it the more it looks like 3D…

September 6, 2006 at 3:11 amThese guys are good. They are the makers and designers of JK Rowling’s website (Harry Potter).
As for the image, looks like 3D to me!

September 6, 2006 at 6:02 amThey are definitely 3D images. The daisy and the water dahlia look far too symmetrical to be based on photos and the black-yellow ladybug just looks fake (it lacks the glossiness that’s very prominent on most sub-species). The header image on the start page is given away by the wrong shape of the drops. You can easily create those using metaball particles or displaced spheres in most 3D programs. The grass can be done using either special hair tools or a series of similarly displaced cylinders.

September 6, 2006 at 3:29 pmMaya’s Paint Effects (the real PE, not the 2D AE plug in from ye olden times) can set this up quite easily and realistically, including the motion.
