  • any hdcam to dvcproHD issues i should know ?

    Hi there !
I’m pretty much new to the all HD stuff… but slowly (and hardly) learning.
I’ve got a short movie i shot in HDCAM 25p (i’m il PAL land) so i got these 5 40′ HDCAM tapes i want to edit on my FCP station, and for now there’s no way for me to afford an online native HDCAM edit (fiber channel is still to expensive)…

In order to avoid an offline (like DVCAM through Sony JH-3 deck for example) edit, i planed to digitize the HDCAM tapes to DVCPROHD (1080 25p), edit the film and do some AE work in DVCPROHD format and then either output to HDCAM tape for color grading or to dvcproHD (to be dubbed in hdcam)

Am i on the wrong way ? will the HDCAM to DVCPROHD and back again route cause any losses in quality ?
Is the “DVCAM offline edit / EDL / HDCAM onlining / finishing” route safer ?

I’m really fond of my images (no self compassion, my DP is just a genius !) and the movie will eventually be blown up to film so quality is an issue (any way who wants any quality loss ?)

    Thanx a lot !

If you are really concerned about quality and could afford it you might consider going 10 or 8 bit 1080 uncompressed for the online and color correction.

But since you can’t afford it you will have to settle for what is in your budget which it looks like editing in the dvcprohd codec is the way to go.

The sad truth of the matter is many independents dream of getting their project out to film but the reality is they never do due to the cost involved.

So I have to ask if you don’t have the money or resources to go uncompressed then where does the money to do the film out magically appear from?

By not going to an uncompressed workflow, one actually can add that pre-production cost to the final film out budget. Possibly upping the final bill an additional $20-30K in color correction and correcting the compression mistakes.

    Yeah i understand your point.
I think i’m going to do an offline cut in DVCPROHD and online the film in Uncompressed at a post facility in order to go to CC
(i have access to a Lustre) and as far as going back to film i’m lucky enought to pay only the film stock and not the process itself.

I’m pretty new to HD and my goal is just to be able to cut this film at home on my personnal fcp, since i have my directorial/editing job by day, and do all the post at the facility.

    Thanx guys
