  • Any explanation for why DVDA misreads file sizes?

Posted by Jerry Waters on March 25, 2007 at 4:14 am

I’ve owned DVDA since version 2, had it and every subsequent version misread a file size by saying it is too big to fit on a disk — such as 4.2gb according to Windows and another DVD program and DVDA says it is 5.3 gb. I have seen others post about the problem and I have submitted questions to Sony and have read this forum regularly for a couple of years. NEVER have I seen this corrected NOR have I ever seen it explained. This makes the program useless in many projects that it should be able to handle. I stand ready to listen. Please explain.

Why would you consider it useless?
I’ve been using DVDA since version 1 and have no issues with this “problem”.
If I’m doing a render over (approx.) 80. min., I use a bitrate calculator to determine settings.
I know my file is under the max so I ignore the warnings.

[JerryW] “makes the program useless in many projects that it should be able to handle.”

If you know the assets are 4.3 GB or less, go ahead and create your (single layer) DVD and ignore the size estimate.

Thanks for the work-around. “Problem” should not be in quotes. It IS a problem and one that has not been addressed through three versions.

No, but it IS addressed in the fourth version.

I must agree with JerryW this does sometimes happen, even when you have calculated the bitrate.

It seems to happen when one file size is large ie the main file is over about 3 gigs. (I have never had this problem with a showreel containing several smaller clips for example) I sometimes find you can fix it be re-rendering the file a calling it something different then deletating the original media. DVDA then asks for a replacement location for the media and magically it has dropped back to the correct (or at least a smaller) size without losing the chapter marker info.

Any more suggestions would be useful though. I am also using DVDA version 4.
