I’m trying to find someone who is familiar with the PD-170 and the DVX-100 to get their opinion.

Short Version of my question: How does the DVX-100A compare to the PD-170 in low-light, event-shooting situations, using 60i. I’m specifically talking about light sensitivity. I’ve seen the numbers, but I want to know what that means in the real world.

The reason I ask is that I’m currently using 2 VX-2000 cameras to shoot weddings and stage performances. They work great, I love them both. However, I’m getting more 3-camera jobs now for which I always have to rent something. So I’m going to buy a 3rd camera for myself. My thinking is that I’ll get a PD-170 to gain XLR inputs which is the one big drawback to my current cameras. I know for a fact I’ll be happy with that purchase, there’s no question about that. All of my paying jobs look great in 60i, it’s what my clients are used to and they’re very happy with it.

But then I started thinking about the DVX-100A and it would really be nice to start working ni 24p mode for my OWN projects that I do for fun on the side. I know for a fact that the DVX would be the best camera for that. I’d love to start using 24p for those.

So right now I KNOW that a PD-170 would be best for my business and I KNOW that a DVX-100A would be best for my own projects. But visa versa? I just don’t know. I don’t know how well a DVX will look next to a VX-2000 shooting in dimily lit areas in 60i mode. Will I be able to get as bright an image with minimal-to-no lighting? Will color correcting each camera to match the other become a much larger project in post?

I gues the situation right now is that I WANT to get a DVX but since I’ve never used one I’m too worried that I’ll suddenly find that I have 1 of 3 cameras that’s not as light sensitive as the others or never quite matches color-wise, or is better or worse in some other way that messes me up. I mean, even if the picture looks far BETTER than my cameras, that’s a problem since I’ll be trying to switch between them. I’m hoping that I can adjust it enough to get an image that’s very similar to a VX-2000.

It seems that everyone likes to talk about the fact that the DVX is a fantastic EFP camera. Are there any ENG shooters here who can fill me in?

    Thanks in advance.

Not exactly a 170 but 150 is pretty much the same cam.

I have owned both 170 and DVX. The problem with shooting two radically different cams is matching footage. The DVX image smokes anything the sony’s can put out. One solution is to adjust a scene file’s the gamma and other settings on the dvx to match more closely that of the VX. Best of both worlds when you can use it for FUN!

    Thanks to both of you.

I know that matching footage will be more work, but I’ve never been afraid of spending time on that kind of challenge. As long as I can work it out I won’t mind the extra effort it takes.

I guess it just comes down to whether or not I’m willing to put more work into my business work in order to get more enjoyment out of my hobby-work. For me, I think the answer’s going to be ‘yes’ to that.

It’ll be a challenge, but when ISN’T this stuff a challenge? Thanks for your thoughts.
