  • Any chance to edit EX-1 35/mps footage w/ G5 quad ?

Posted by John Rogers on June 8, 2008 at 5:16 am

Does anyone think that someone will write software so that i can edit sony ex-1 HQ footage (35 mb/sec) on my powermac G5 quad with fcp 6 ? right now, you need an intel box to do that with the 35 mb/sec footage. I put so much money into my G5 quad, right now the value on them is plummeting, i dont want to take a beating, is there any other program i could use on this cpu to edit this footage? thanks, john

Who says you need an Intel to work EX-1 in your MAC? You can in your G5.
As long as you have Leopard and FC6, you have the codec to edit. You can also install the SONY Transfer software to download the files from camera. With a G5 PPC Double 2Ghz is enough. You have a Quad, so shouldn’t be any problem. If you have question about the EX-1, please have alook in the SONY Cine Alta Forum here in the COW.
    (EX-1: Incredible camera, BTW).
    Cheers,

..and always a big mess on top of the table.

I was told by three people that apple never included the sony EX-1 35 mb/sec codec for non-intel machines and that they never would go backwards to write for non-intel machines. So if i install leopard and fcp 6, that is it, i can edit that footage? really? i hope you are right, cant believe how hard i searched for info and found zip. thanks, john

Minimum requirements for editing EX footage:

    Mac OS 10.4.11
    QT 7.3.1
    FCP 6.0.2
    Sony Transfer Tool software
    Sony FAM driver

Works on Intel or PPC G5

The only thing you can’t use on your G5 is the free Sony Clip Browser. It’s Intel only.

So listen John what Don says. And the SONY Clip Browser you don’t really need it. I don’t have it even installed.
    Hi Don,
I’m about to go to sleep but tomorrow I’ll post something about the Flashes and the EX-1.
    Cheers,

Hi all. I’ll be buying an EX3 as soon as it comes out. I currently have a G5 dual 2.7. Can I edit EX35mps natively or should it be edited uncompressed? I’ve been told trying to edit native xdcam ex on a G5 would be very painful.

    thanks,

    Rick

    Rick,
I’ve been editing DV for a few years and now working with EX-1. The only difference you may find is that you my not be able to run some GCU based effects depending of the performance of your video card.
But this will happens with any HD footage, not only with EX-1.

Hi, two years after your initial discussion, what was your conclusion? Was the G5 Quad up to the task of editing EX1 footage? Did you upgrade? What are the limitations of the G5? Tell all please!! They are getting cheaper on eBay and I might just get one.
