I have an ASUS motherboard with single six core i7 980x, I’m interested in configuring this system with 2x Nivida 590s as a resolve box.

Would I get any benefit from extra cores, eg on debayering speed with R3D files or would it depend more on the graphics cards?

Debayering speed will increase, especially with R3D. There have already been comparisons of Red Rocket vs dual Xeons/i7s. If I remember correctly, two CPUs should be equal to one Rocket.

ok thanks guess I’ll keep this machine as a training system then and buy a dual socket quad core box for the production one.
