  • Any Avid solution to flicker in XDCAM EX footage?

Posted by Michael Hannan on September 17, 2009 at 2:44 pm

Does anyone know of any way to remove or reduce flicker that exists in footage shot on the Sony XDCAM EX camera? I’m working on an Avid Media Composer. The flicker problem seems to be a fairly common occurrence with that camera and is causing a fair bit of trouble for me. Thanks.

    Can you describe the flicker?

Many can be handled with this plugin:

any chance the ex1 was set to 24p? Unlike many tape and some card based systems, the ex1 will give you true 24 frame material. I had this problem on a show last winter with some ex1 material.Icreated a 24 frame project and went out to DVCPRO100 and back in to solve the issue.

The EX uses a CMOS sensor and it will flicker if the conditions aren’t to it’s liking. I learned this the hard way while shooting a concert in another country. I don’t know if there’s a plug in that will fix it but any ‘treatment’ of the footage will be some sort of compromise. Good luck though… I feel your pain.

Thanks for the replies. It’s not a 24p issue, I’ve tried the flickerfix plugin also to no avail. I think my best solution is to cut around it, luckily I have a lot of footage to choose from and the problem certainly is intermittent. One clip will have the flicker, the next one won’t, then it’s back on the next clip. Hard to figure out, just an annoying idiosyncracy I suppose.
