Anti Virus and Vegas
Posted by Doug Lewis on March 2, 2006 at 7:29 pmAnyone having any problems with Norton Anti Virus 2006 and Vegas. It is time for me to renew my 2005 version, which is working OK, but not sure weather to spend $30 to renew or buy 2006 at Sam’s for $28.00. 2006 for $2 less is obviously the best deal but I thought I heard about some compatability problems with 2006 version. Any thoughts?

March 2, 2006 at 7:43 pmFirst of all, Norton is a resource hog and most people I know don’t use it. If you do use it, when you edit, turn it off. If you want a free alternative that eats up fewer resources and is trouble free, check out AVAST Free edition or AVG—-(you should still turn them off when you are working in Vegas)

March 2, 2006 at 8:30 pmI’m using Kaspersky AV 5.0.388 without any problem.
I don’t have to turn it off while using Vegas.I’ve heard the best is NOD32, maybe you can try it,
I’ll do the same when Kaspersky expires.By(t)e

March 3, 2006 at 1:10 amFirst off, I wouldn’t use Norton if they gave it to me and paid me to use it. Back when Norton actually owned it along with Norton’s Utilities for DOS 3./5 and up it was the greatest. (ha! showing my age!)
As mentioned above it’s a resource hog, big time. Also been known to trash computers after a year or so so figure on re-formatting your HD. At least that was the way it was in Windows 98 days. I dumped it before upgrading to W2K and now I got XP.
I used NOD32 by ESET for years and touted it as the best. However they did a major change last year and I didn’t care for it personally.
Now I use AVG free. Best thing is AVG does NOT affect Vegas at all for me.
Anyway why pay when you can get a good one for free and IMO anything’s better than Norton.

March 3, 2006 at 3:00 amI find that the use of resources while running Vegas often boils down to the project you are working on. I work on large projects—and thus, I tax the living hell out of my computer—-I find that when the resources are shutdown, it is less likely that I will get the dreded freeze. If you are editing a short piece, I guess it isn’t as important. By the way, AVG is another good one–Again, there is no rational reason, in this day and age, for anyone to use Norton Anti-Virus.

March 3, 2006 at 3:29 amOK, so I’m convinced NOT to get Norton 2006. The Norton 2005 has run out on one of my computers and the other expires in May. Give me some advice as to the best way to rid my computers of all of Norton and install either AVAST or AVG. I’ve not had any problems with Norton 2005, but maybe I’m pressing my luck.

March 3, 2006 at 4:29 amOkay—-first thing is to go to add/remove software and run the uninstall for Norton—The next thing is to go into the registry (back it up first) and type in the find box Norton—-then delete every entry left. That should do it—Then download either of AVG or AVAST and you are good to go. Make sure you backup your registry first (although if you just delete every Norton reference you should be okay)

March 3, 2006 at 4:38 amTry uninstalling all Norton products.
There may be a removal tool from Symantic to completely remove all traces.
or
search the registry if you dare and remove any links that appear to call on .dll or .exe files to run.
Run MSconfig and check that no Symantic/Norton links are running.
or
reformat and use AVG or Avast or AntiVir. I personally prefer AVG over Avast but I’ve heard that AntiVir is pretty good also. -

March 3, 2006 at 2:55 pmGeez, everyone is so anti-Norton.
I’ve used their SystemWorks for years, with no problems. The thing I like about it that it includes the whole suite of diagnosis and repair tools as well as the antivirus software.

This is not exact.I’ve used for years their Personal Firewall (the 2001 or 2002 version, can’t remember).
Fine-tuneable, very good firewall the best firewall I ever used
-after AT guard.
But not compatible with XP, so I decided to Kerio, it’s free (exactly- the most important portion of it is free, the full version is not). Also the Norton Speedisk was a great defrag tool!
(I have an old version of it, last time on Win2k used it,
didn’t try on XP yet)I also used NAV, but IMO it’s security/reliability is down-below.
I got more times bad, harmful worms so that I had reinstall – beside the “protection” of NAV.
That’s why I recommend against Norton AV.Other tools of Norton (Symantec) may be, and probably are good products.

What’s Kerio? A firewall? I’m looking for a 2-way firewall. Do’t care for Zone Alarm and Alluria’s only 1 way protection.Yea, the utilities were great.
