I use Anti-Matte on an Avid where I can shape a matte around an object or person. I can then key another video clip under the matte on a separate video track.

Is there a way to do this in FCP?

Animatte. It is called an Animatte. And the closest you can get to that in FCP is an 8-point garbage matte, but it doesn’t have curves and bezier handles. There are mattes with more points out there…32point, 64point. All third party.

    Nope…I sure miss my Animatte.

Another option is to use the “Send to…” feature and create an animated matte in any number of other apps, Motion, Shake, AE, etc.

Sorry, should be Animatte. Do you know of a third party import that can make curves in FCP?

I don’t have AE or Shake. I tried Motion but couldn’t get it to work the way I want it to. Wish there was a 3rd party plugin that I could use in FCP.

CHV is a little better than the FCPro garbage matte,
a little window in the corner shows a blow in of where you’re placing
your keyframe. But you basically have to drag the keyframes around the
    object.

Much easier to draw them in with the bezier handles.

Funny, I just posted about this above not knowing about his post.
Obviously needed and wanted by many.
