Ok, so I know that AE can only use 3gbs of RAM. Why does it only use a small amount of that total RAM, in my present case (12% of 3 gbs).

No other apps are running and the composition is pretty light (1 main comp 45mins. with 7 nested comps that all include stills that move left to right. There are not that many stills, Main comp is 720 x 480, the sub comps are bigger depending on the amount of photos in them, but nothing that seems, too large?)

When i started my render I originally would get a little ways in and get the error message “can’t create preview for (blah X blah) image buffer. So I set the secret prefs to purge every 5th frame. This got my render going, but is extremely slow. I have been rendering for roughly 10 hrs and have another 2 to go. for the size and weight of this project, I wouldnt think it would take more than an hour or two AT MOST. I know purging the RAM, slows it down, but this much?

I recently upgraded, I guess, to dual 3ghz Mac pro, 4.5 gb ram, Nividia Geforce 7300 GT from a G5 with the same amount of RAM. I never had this problem with the G5, during rendering. Could this be a problem with AE and the intel Mac?

Check your ram cache settings – make sure its not set to only use a small portion of ram.

That said – I’ve always had problems with AE memory management – I tell it to use 80% of ram (2G), yet sometimes it only ram caches a small portion of the project with lots of ram still free. Its also unpredictable when it starts using disk cache – sometimes a ram preview will stop w/o ever disk caching anything, even though I have it turned on. This is all on a PC – not sure if mac has same problems.

Hopefully this is better in 7 – what version you on?
