  • Another Lower Thirds Creation Question

Posted by Ron Whitaker on August 18, 2013 at 5:28 am

Everything was working fine, and now I have no clue why it’s not working.

    Created lower thirds.

Rendered out lower thirds using Quicktime with Animation and 32 bpp color set in Render As settings.

Brought clip into project, right-clicked, selected Properties, then set Alpha Channel to Straight (unmatted).

    Worked great.

Went back into project for lower thirds because I wanted to lengthen it out a bit and make some modifications.

Went through the same Render As settings as before.

Now, Alpha Channel won’t work when I bring it back into project.

Under Alpha Channel settings, I can’t even select a Background Color. Background Color is just grayed out.

    Why?

How did you lengthen the Event and what mods did you make did you apply to the Event?

I just opened the original .mov file, pulled the clip and re-rendered.

I actually started over, deleted the .mov files and started with the original .veg file I had and rendered to .mov.

    Simply doesn’t work anymore.

What are the correct settings in the QuickTime Render As for an alpha channel when you’re wanting to make a lower thirds?

For a change to see if things work, Try using Quicktime PNG,
32 bpp Color and Quality at 100%…And just double check that
you do not have any form of generated media or event lying on
the timeline below your lower third. This is my all time preferred render format when rendering an Alpha Channel.

[Ron Whitaker] ” pulled the clip”

    What do you mean, “pulled”?

    I think I found the problem…and perhaps a bug!

What I did was create a new project in which I had my logo pop up from the bottom, then some bars slide in from the right.

I rendered that out as a QT file as Animation and 32 BPP Color and 100% quality.

Brought it into a project and it worked great with alpha channel!

So, I decided that I wanted to have the logo and bars slide in, then reverse and go out after a few seconds.

So, I created a new project, brought in the QT file, CTRL dragged it to create a copy, placed it next to the original, then reversed it.

Then rendered it out…and BAM…there’s the problem.

For some reason I can’t get SV 12 to alpha channel a clip that has a reversed video clip.

Is there a way to do what I want?

That’s why I was asking about what you meant by “pulled”. There has to be some interim resampling going on to evoke that contraindication for the user-expectation. In plain English, I too would EXPECT to be able to use any, and all of the visual manipulations to get what I want. Here, that means the ability to reverse and retain an ALPHA on render. But this might be a step too far for Vegas. Maybe an interim-render is required? But yes, if you can repro and bullet-proof the anomaly for SONY, then report it! If you don’t I certainly will. A real stab in the dark here, try disabling Resampling? Back in 2011, I’ve got myself into a real mess with reversing ALPHA transparent logos – oh yes . . . Resulted in me needing to rework the whole Event to accommodate the reversal.

Anyhoo…. If it aint a bug it is an over-sight in the functionality.

    If you’re correct it’s a nice catch.

    Cheers

    Actually, I solved this!

I simply opened the original .veg file, copied the logo and bar clips, reversed them manually in Pan/Crop, then rendered.

Alpha Channel works like a charm!

So you went back to “first principles”, which is exactly what I had to do and :

    [Ron Whitaker]

. . and now you have your workflow working.

Utilising the Reverse function introduced the removal of the Alpha option. Recognising this is fundamental and worth reporting back to SCS.
