Another fixture question
Posted by Vince Becquiot on July 21, 2007 at 6:02 pmThanks for the advice on the previous post.
So, I do need some specific interview fixtures.
I usually rent the Arrilites 1000 with chimeras etc.
Now, should I just buy the 2K, and just change bulbs when enough power isn’t available (and needed)?
Any reasons why I shouldn’t?
Any other recommendations?
Thanks,
Vince

Sorry for jumping in late.
But why do you need a 2k?
What are you trying to light?

July 29, 2007 at 11:04 pmNo problem,
I currently have a few lights. (Arrilites open face, and fresnels, all 1K or less)
However, I recently purchased a couple of large Chimeras and found that 1K just not going to do it (which I expected).
These lasrge boxes just come really handy for larger productions.
I just want to keep these news fixture I want to buy for them versatile, since there are not many location where I’ll be able to pull those 20 amp circuits.
Are there any other switchable lights 1k/2k anyone would recommend?
Thanks,
Vince

July 30, 2007 at 12:40 amMost company’s 2000w Fresnels can be lamped down to 1,500w and 1,000w.
Just buy whatever model fits the Lightbank “O” rings that you already own.
Unfortunately you can’t “lamp up” your 1000w fixtures.
Your instincts are correct also. I always prefer using larger lens fixtures, as the quality of the light is so much better.
Even though “Baby” 2k’s and “baby-baby” solarspots are very convenient, the quality of the light is much harsher.
In many studio applications I’ve actually used 5,000w Fresnels as my instrument of choice — and lamped them down to 2,000w when necessary. Depending on how big your Chimera Lightbanks are you may need the output of a 5,000w source — especially if you’re using 30 or 60 degree “hard” honeycombs (which is the only way to go….. in my opinion!).
The bigger Lightbanks also afford you the possibility of using them on your HMI’s.
