This post wasn’t about moving projects – I did all this weeks ago – it was about making re-linking better. I think it needs MUCH improvement.

I was responding directly to this statement:

[Lance Bachelder] “Like I’ve said – all my current headaches are this feature film that was handed to me from another Editor who used FCPX and built a complete mess – all I’d like to do is get a clean timeline as ONE Event or Project that leaves all the 50+ Events behind so I can hit space-bar and wait up to 6 seconds to begin playing.”

I think relinking in FCPX by re-dragging them in the event is really a quick way, much faster then how it was in 7.

And did I mention that in FCPX, when you change the name of à file, change the name of the folder where it’s in, or change the place of where your file is, put it in Another folder, that despite doing all of this, as long as it’s on the Same drive your footage was originally, FCPX will relink automatically without you doing anything at all because it finds the file based on deeper metadata. This is great!

Although, you have to be carefull with opening a file you use in FCPX in Another program though. This can change the metadata, and then FCPX can loose connection with the file.

Actaully the entire relinking process is currently pretty stupid. If this whole app is such a great database, it should just find the files. Period. In Media Composer, I can manually move files from one drive to another and delete the original location – even with the application open – and MC simply rescans the drives and finds the files. No problem.

Very true. Although at least with the current method when it gets the files it actually relinks vs saying it’s changed, not relinking, and sending me on my way. Those days were rough.

    Agreed!

And it certainly does re-establish links for drives that are physically swapped (unplugged and replugged).

If files are linked, I can move files around the SAN and everything stays linked, I can even change directories, all with fcpx open.

If files are in the Event, they go offline when moved. Put them back and relink. Moving links also takes things offline.

Something has to be in the Event media folders or fcpx has no link to anything.

I don’t find it stupid at all. Some limitations, yes, but in many ways its also better than 7. Drag and dropping a folder to relink is really easy.

Don’t know what version of FCPX you guys are using but on this current project – NOTHING works! Can’t re-link by menu or drag and drop, Duplicating project creates Event with everything linked but Project totally offline. The fun part is when you try to re-link, point to the folder it asks for and it tells you there are no matching files – love that feature!

Just a very frustrating mess that I’ve never experienced in any other NLE in almost 20 years of doing this stuff..

It’s hard to tell what’s going on from your screen grabs.

I’m sorry someone handed you what is essentially 50 projects and left you to fend for yourself.

    Your Project says “missing Event”.

You can single click the project, open the inspector, click “modify event references” and point the project at an event that contains the media.

Or load the proper event to your hard drives.
