Another AVCHD upload problem
Hello Cow,
I have a problem that I need help with and I thought there should be a simple fix or solution but maybe I’m over looking something.
I have a just purchased 3 Sony HXR-NX5U cameras that I’m trying to upload some footage to Vegas Pro 8.1. From what I understood when I upgraded to 8.1, was that it would handle the AVCHD files. It does not. Files are in .MTS format which Vegas seems to unrecognized.
I have clicked and dragged the files from the camera, I have used the file management software that came with the cameras, I tried dropping it into the time line, and nothing is working. I tried importing AVCHD from the file menu only to have it stop at 25% and say there is not enough memory in the computer.So much for the supposed quickness of tapeless format. Atleast with tapes, I know what to expect and I would have had all my footage uploaded by now!
Does anyone know what I have over looked?
Cameras – see above.
Footage – HD 1920×1080 of course.
Computer, Quad Processor, 2.5Ghz, 4 GB mem, 1GB video mem, Untold number of Terabits of HDD – close to 10 anyways.Thanks

Try using Vegas Pro 8.0c and see if that accepts AVCHD. Vegas Pro 8.1 is not something I would use to do serious production work. It is older than 8.0c, has less features, and more bugs. If you really want to work in 64-bit, you need to use Vegas Pro 9 or 10.

Now those are some nice cameras! You should defenetly be using Vegas Pro 10 64 bit as it has the ability to work with your AVCHD .mts files very smoothly. You are correct John, Pro 8C does see and work with .mts fils, up to 1080 60p. I happened to still have 8C on an old dual core 2.8 desktop with Windows XP. But it’s so sluggish with an .mts file, with NO effects, even with preview set to preview auto I only get maybe 3 fps preview. But on my i7 930 6 gig ram Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, with the same file, without effects running Vegas Pro 10a, I get fantastic preview framerates ,even set to best full. It may not be the full 60p but it looks like at least 30. I don’t know haw to tell for sure. John, do you know how I can find out the true preview framerate is? Now if using certain effects like color correction where every pixel is effected the preview framrate drops pretty significantly, but you can always set the effect paramemers to your liking, then turn off the effect and continue editing, then turn it (them) back on before rendering. Ken, with that computer and 3 of thse cameras at 4 grand a piece, you really should be running Pro 10, only a few hundred bucks for an upgrade.

The FPS is displayed at the bottom of the preview window. Is this not what you are looking for?

I’ll second that one. I’m always amazed at people who buy new cameras and use old software. You really should keep your software up to date.

Ok,
Just wanted to let everyone know that I have solved our problem. I upgrade to Vegas 10.0 (it was on special for 139.00) It uploaded the files just like it should. We have just finished editing our first HD music videos, and it looks great. I really can’t tell if it’s any slower/faster to render HD then SD footage. I think its about the same or at least it seems that way.
