What a dismally shot-sighted *oversight*. After years of becoming accustomed to Photoshop’s illustriously *fluid* gradient editor bar one would’ve thought that Adobe’s AfterFX team would get it by now.
“Colorama” is not even close to a workaround. The simple “Ramp” is just that and the 4-Color gradient just doesn’t even come close. The most frustrating part about it all is that I’ve alreay *seen* with my own eyes *exactly* this straight-forward feature of an *Animatable PShop-style Gradient Editor in *Motion 2*.
All i can say is that with all of Adobe’s blowing its own horn about *Seamless Suite integration* one would have thought that the wizards of AfterFX would’ve figured out how to incorporate what *Motion 2* has already apparently produced. I’m working upon a specific project that i was dying to have *atleast* PShop style animatable gradents in AE7.0 .What an exasperating letdown that this basic yet colorfully elegant FX tool has failed to make its appearance in AE7.0. From what i’ve seen from the entire Total Training DVD-ROM on AE7.0 I just don’t feel I have any real reason to upgrade. Would rahter spend the money on *Motion 2* and other Plug-ins that deal with gradeints the way AfterFX does *not*.
Hope this justifiable rant makes it way to Adobe’s wizards of AE because this latest release gives short-shrift to artists wishing AE would finally become PShop with a timeline ; advanced brush engine and all!
C’mon , Adobe , this is well-into the 21st Century for crying out loud.

Have you tried using the Ramp effect with colorama? Use the controls of the Ramp effect to position and change from the gradient to radial or linear and then use the colorama to remap the black and white ramp to any color you want. It works well with control over keyframing and the like.

I know you aren’t looking for help but for others reading…

Don’t forget you can always make a feature request direct to Adobe:

    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

And if you REALLY want a powerful gradient editor within AE right now, consider GradientWerks from Zaxwerks:

What I meant to say was:

I do appreciate the *work around* Andrew , but it was one of thiose *compoud filter* recipees that I’d forgotten and left alone thinking that , with all of Adobe’s promo-babble on streamlining an integrate suite of its grafx products , Adobe would finally migrate Photoshop “Styles” into AE and finally allow *animation* of their parameters.
Though , thanks to you , it all came back to me once I took your suggestion. I can animate the movement of individual color bands on the Colorama color wheel as well as blend one custom color ensemble into another. however I am not at all thrilled with the *cycling* of the colors because of that absolutely annoying hard line demarcation between the color at 360 degrees and back to 1 degree. *No* amount of finaggling with the color arrows for spreading out a blend does anything to get rid of that hard demarcation line. Why is there not a continuous *seamless* blend right out of the gate not requiring yet another workaround?
Obviously this issue about straight-forward animatable Gradients in particular , and PShop *Styles* in general , has not just occurred to me since not only *Motion 2* has a more straight-forward and direct means ( and not some compound filter formulae ) and *now* here news of Zaxworks , thanks to the 2nd responder , with the direct equivalent to Adobe PShop’s *Styles* as a plug-in. I’m glad someone finally *got* the message and actually *did* something to address it.
