I brought in a number of photoshop flats into a composition. All of them have been used as 3D elements. The 3D Switches are on all of them. When I then nest this composition into a new composition they come in as a flat. When I switch the nested comp to 3D the flat arranges itself in 3D space but the depth cues from the first comp to not carry over. I’ve done this before only I used after effects solids as stand ins. Then it worked fine but now I lose my 3D-ness in the nested comp. Anyone know why or how to defeat it?

Are you using continuously rasterize/ collapse transformations properly? If you apply it to your imported bitmap layers it has a different meaning than on vector based layers or solids. Check this, I’m sure somewhere you are using one such switch that screws AE’s rendering order and flattens your folded comp.
