Ok im very frustrated right now. Im new to C4D but have been using 3dsmax, xsi for years. And ive really been liking C4D besides this really little thing that im sure is a stupid easy fix but is driving me crazy. So im working with a dual monitor set-up, with my viewports on the left and timeline/shaders/curve editor/etc on the right. Well out of nowhere my viewports disappear. So i quit the project hoping that when i re-open it my layout will return, well it opened with everything crammed into a single screen. And i thought i saved my layout somewhere so i went into “windows” and selected the first “user” preset layout…BID MISTAKE because now i have everything crammed on one monitor but ALL of my options are GONE. And by opetions i mean “file. edit….everything on that toolbar. It actually still has “file” but only the option to “quit” under it. So now i cant do ANYTHING.

Is there a way to trash the layout pref’s so i can at least get back to a basic layout that gives me the options to at least do anything?

If you click on the top icon in the left-side toolbar, the layout presets will open in a flyout menu. If you select “Standard” it should get you back to square one.

Once you get things set up the way you like you should run Window>Layout>Save as Startup Layout. Of course you can save as many layouts as you like.

One thing that you *can’t* fix, AFAIK, at least on Windows, is Cinema starting up a dual-monitor layout on one monitor … so I always have to maximize Cinema after opening. Not a big deal but annoying.

Ya of course 5min after posting i found that option on the side and then was able to navigate my way back to my layout preset. So what exactly is the point of that “start-up” layout option besides to throw people like me off (when i have a client on there way to see the work ive done). I guess since theyve made c4d so easy to work with in so many other ways i can let this one go lol.

Startup layout just defines the default layout that Cinema opens with.
