  • Animatte for garbage masks: edges visible

    Hi all:

A friend of mine is trying to do some chroma keying work in Avid Media Composer, and since the image isn’t very well lit, he is splitting it in different layers, isolating each part with Animatte garbage masks, and applying Spectramatte with different parameters to each one. So far so good, but the problem is that, when he applies the garbage mask, its edges are clearly visible as thin black lines; it doesn’t matter whether he moves up or down the Feather/Bias parameter, the lines are still there. This happens whether he uses the Poly or the rectangle tool to create the mask.

What gives? Both he and I have been doing some searches and asking around, and we haven’t found anyone with a similar problem. How can it be solved?

    Thanks in advance,

    Paulo.

I dont know why a nested feathered edged animatte would do this.
Does it happen when spectamatte is not promoted to 3D? I have noticed many behavoral changes in and out of 3D mode with spectamatte.
AE is always a fool proof plan. I hate to sound like a beating drum here but you can quickly stack, key and mask in AE without any of these issues. Things like sift drop shadows, ect become much quicker and easier in AE in the long run.

Thanks for your answer. The thing is… none of the effects are promoted to 3D, and promoting them makes no difference.

I know about AE, but the Avid->AE->Avid workflow is kind of a pain, and my friend doesn’t have Automatic Duck.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. If the Spectramatte / animatte combo causes this issue, drop a paint effect on the shot and draw over the are you want removed and fil it with the keying color. Now use Spectramatte as usual.

Did anyone ever figure this out? I’m having the exact same issue. My final composite will be in AE, but I’m doing some temp work quickly and still get the visible edges.
