Animation question
General animation question.
I’m going to be working with an illustrator to create a very short animation that will introduce a series of videos I’m producing. The videos are being edited in FCP. The illustrator will create his artwork in Adobe illustrator–vector. I’ve done some simple flash animation before, but I don’t even know if an animation in Flash is able to be brought into a FCP timeline. I also have Apple Motion, which came with Final Cut Studio2. I don’t have the budget to pay for another program, like AE.
The animation will probably be about 5-8 seconds long, and will be on the crude/simple side. For instance the illustrator could create moveable arms and legs so that I could move the character around a bit. Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to piece together his still frames into a simple animation. And what software I could use, given what I already have?

If you have QuickTime Pro you can load all the frames as a sequence of images, and then export the clips as a QT movie with the codec of your choice. You then load the clip in FCP.

Dang. Don’t have quicktime pro. Can you do the same thing in FCP? Or photoshop?

Don’t know about PS but FCP doesn’t handle sequences of images. You can use Blender’s sequence editor to do the same.
If you’re not familiar with Blender, it’s a 3D modeling/animation software. It’s Open Source and you can download it from https://www.blender.org
Search YouTube for tutorials on how to turn a image sequence to a clip.—

I forgot that there is another software that is pretty much a must-have if you do animations: djv.
This is a OSS player that allows you to playback image sequences like there were movie clips.
Once you have it running, go to the preferences, click on the File IO tab and select QuickTime/Save. Set the codec to JPEG lossless and then drag-and-drop the first frame in your animation into the djv window. From the menu select File/Save, give the name with the .mov extension and you’re done.DJV is at https://djv.sourceforge.net/

[Dave] Since you have Motion, it’s time to learn how to do it in Motion. I’m an AE guy, but people who use Motion say it’ll do much of what AE can do.
Dave is right. I use both AE and Motion, and yes, this can be done in Motion with no problems. I think you will really enjoy the realtime playback on a simple animation like this.

These days I’m always in an edit-bay and don’t make it out to shots anymore. Sorry, it was not me. Unless the footage turned out amazing…then I’ll take credit for someone else’s work 😉

If you are going to export an image sequence to Motion, and Motion can do what AE can – I suggest exporting and Illustrator sequence from Flash over any other export. I don’t use Motion for this, but in AE with Illustrator sequences, you can scale them as large as you need to without losing resolution like you would with a png or jpeg sequence.
