Animation job title terminology…
Not your usual forum post so apologies in advance if this is in the wrong place, I did look through the forum listings and couldn’t somewhere immediately more appropriate. Please re-allocate the post if there is a more suitable forum.
We are currently looking for a Graphic Designer/Animation freelancer to help us both plan and complete asmall-scale digital advertising project but we are not sure exactly how to describe such a person. We want to post on the CreativeCow Jobs site but want to make sure we are targeting the right people.
The job is for web media and the concept is not yet decided upon since we would like a designer thoughts and input. It is however likely to involve:
– 2D Animation
– Elements of 3D, but like 3D in After Effects and Illustrator, rather than modelling such as Maya or 3D max.
– Depending on approach may mix live-action footage and/or photos.From my basic knowledge of this topic I believe programs such as the below may be required skills:
– After Effects
– Illustrator
– Photoshop
– Premiere ProWe are thinking that the project should be published in HTML5, I don’t know if this impacts the type of person we are looking for.
Is there a single job title that would describe such a person?

I would call it a “2D Animator/Motion Graphics Specialist”
In your ad you can then outline that some “faux” 3d experience is needed in After Effects and the ability to composite live action footage is preferred to.
You may want someone with web programming experience, but chances are your animator will just be supplying h.264 or webm video files. You’ll have to get a programmer if you want to take image layers and natively animate them within HTML5 (it’s such an over reaching process, you’d drive a single guy crazy and that’s assuming you can find one person to cover all the bases).

It’s quite alright if you’re confused, the last thing you want to do is to confuse your supplier.
If you don’t need full-on 3D from a 3D app, then don’t even mention Maya.
Then go look for something similar on youtube or vimeo or some other URL that encompasses your needs. And if you need HTML5, do you really need interactivity within the video or within the page where the video resides? Be as descriptive as you can; flowcharts do a good job should you need to provide instructions on the required interactivity and from which element within the Webpage.
Oftentimes, we provide a service, not a product. Even when the type of service is clear, the level of that service may be less clear. With so much available over the Web in terms of examples, it’s a sin not to use it effectively to convey your needs to your supplier.

Thank you for your responses, I think we will go with ‘2D Animator/Motion Graphics Specialist’ as recommended.
We don’t need the video to actually be programed in HTML5 so if it was conformed to h.264 or .webm that would be absolutely fine.
I’ll be posting the job later this after so if anyone is interested it will be on the Creative Cow jobs site.
