    Hi folks.

I’m working with 1280×720 ProRes HQ material in AE7, outputting to quicktime files using the Animation codec (Lossless module in AE). When I import into FCP2, the files look great in the viewer. But then when they are dropped into a ProRes HQ timeline, the resulting render looks horrible. LOTS of loss in the final timeline.

I also just tested outputting directly to ProRes HQ from AE7 and I get the same thing. Am I missing something? Is this a Quicktime issue? It appears as if ProRes HQ is lossy between renders.

My first question would be are you sure you have your render handlers set up properly in FCP? bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Is pulldown an issue here? Animation: 4:4:4, ProRes 4:2:2.

Pulldown typically refers to 3:2 pulldown. Frame rate is 23.98 in and out in my case. But if you mean color difference between 4:4:4 and 4:2:2, I’m not sure.

It’s strange to me that the Animation codec looks good in the viewer and in the final render in the timeline.

    Any clues?

    Correction:

I meant to say “…NOT in the final render in the timeline” in that last post.

We’re viewing the image on the Panasonic BT-LH2600 hi def broadcast monitor.

    Interlacing isn’t a problem here.

So NO ONE has run into this problem?! Can anyone at Apple, Adobe or otherwise confirm that ProRes can make the round trip FCP2->AE7->FCP2 without loss? Or is it known to be lossy?

    Thanks for any help.

Recently Adolfo posted a link from here to Capria.tv that seemed to indicate that the codec is best avoided for a while.

Thanks, Steve. Frank Capria’s article is confirmation of that. The workaround he suggests for the time being is transcoding clips to the Animation codec with Final Cut
