Okay, I want to have a squiggly line draw on and from top to bottom and then draw off from bottom to top. I can successfully paint on, but I can’t for the life of me paint it off.

    What I’ve done so far.

Created a null object surrounding the pic I want to paint over (so that the line will go over the pict and background)

    Did a paint on.

Now that works, but how do I get it to paint off in the other direction? I figure it’s either blindingly simple or incredibly difficult, but I can get it. Any help would be appreciated

I’m no paint expert, but after a quick test, you can do what you want by keyframing the Start and End parameters under Paint (twirl down until you get there). Zero keyframes for Start and End, then down the timeline, 0 Start 100% end, then farther down, Start 100% and End 100%.

Also, put the Paint on a new Solid layer, make it black for transparent and check the “Paint on Transparent” box or have it “On” (Oh, I guess the Solid doen’t have to be Black if you check that box, ooops), nulls are only 100×100 and won’t render as visible, methinks.

You could also do this by just drawing your line with the pen tool and using the stroke tool. You would set keyframes for the star and end properties to have the line draw on and off.

Hope that gives you an alt plan.
