  • Animating Text…want mask to stay put.

Posted by Chris Harris on July 31, 2008 at 11:55 pm

I’m animating some text onto a video. I want the text slide in from a point on the screen (not from off the screen) So, I figure I would employ a mask. Is there a way to get the mask to just stay in one place instead of traveling along with the moving text? My current method is positioning the mask and then setting key frames to fix it’s wanderings.

    Thanks,

You could precompose the text animation, and then put the mask onto the nested compostition. Select the text layer and then press Cmd + Shift +C. But yeah, it would have been nice if the masks in AE could be unlinked, like in Photoshop.

If you want to avoid precomps, add a solid white layer above the text and draw your mask onto this layer. Then set the text to use the solid as an alpha matte.

Thanks Simon. I asked that question some time ago…and it worked then…so, thanks again. Here’s a new quandry…

I’m utilizing the technique you (Simon) suggested on some 3D text layers that I’m animating. The problem now is that the text, while it’s masked by solid layer used as an alpha matte, casts a shadow. The text isn’t there, but the shadow is. What can I do? The whole point is to still avoid animating a mask on the text layer.

    Thanks,
