    Hey everyone,
I am trying to make a wall start cracking (before it shatters, but I got that one done already)
I tried drawing the cracks and than animate the mask , but thats doesnt look too good. Anyone have any idea on how to do this ?

Also, the footage was taken on a tripod but I wanna move the shot as if it was hand held, any ideas on that one ?

    Thanks in advance!

You might try the lightning plugin to generate a matte layer. If you can find an image of some cracks you like, you could reveal them using the paint plugin.

To shake the final comp place a null in the comp and wiggle it’s position and scale and then parent the other elements to it. The problem of course will be that your bkg plate will show it’s edges so you have to scale everything up just enough to prevent that from happing. Add another null and parent the first null to it and then scale up as needed.

The lightning plugin was a good idea to get crack shapes. but how exactly do I generate a matte layer from that? since the plugin makes the lightning moving and not just one piece of crack like I would like

Try shattering a layer with the effect called Simulation > Shatter.

    Set the shape to Glass

Set the viscosity all the way up to 1

    Set the Gravity to 0

May not be waht you want, but maybe…

Scott Frizzle’s freebie animation preset “Quaker” is great for camera/scene shake, fills in the edge pixels and all, check it out:

    https://www.scottfrizzle.com/free_quake.html

Just add the preset to the preset folder in Adobe>AE>support or navigate to it from Animation > Apply Animation Preset.
It’s all explained in a pdf. Sample movie available at site.

You could do Composition>Save Frame As to get a still of that lightning you like.

yikesmikes is right on here. Make a new comp, add a solid, add lightning effect and tweak until your happy with the shape at a given frame, export that frame and bring it back into you project. Viola, you have a crack matte.
