Any ideas on how to animate a bull whip without going frame by frame as the whip rolls out to crack?

… still image? If so, just one or several for different segments?
… masked AE solid with effects applied for texture or other details?
… 3D model? If so, via Invigorator?

2. apply stroke effect
3. make bezier points on the solid/stroke
4. animate the mask path
