Using AE6.5 I’m trying to display a route on a map the is tilting down. I normally use a mask to reveal the route but since the camera is tilting down the map the start point of my mask moves from it’s correct location and it shouldn’t. Is there an easier way to do this or a way to “lock” the starting point of my route and use a mask to reveal the route. I’ve tried creating the route that I’m using in Photoshop and using a solid in AE. Appreciate any suggestions.

I would make the layers 3d and use a camera to do the tilt, that way when you tilt down the layers will stay where they are just the camera will move.. Just make sure that the layers are positioned properly.

If you go to dv.com Trish and Chris Meyer have an awesome tutorial in the motion graphics area about exactly that.

I think you can do the mask reveal in a precomp and then apply Distort>Corner Pin, then just move the corners until the reveal lays on the map the way you like.

Maybe you can use a plug-in from Trapcode.com that is called “3D Stroke”. Go see the Gallery and I’m sure you’ll find a way to do this…And many many other nice things…I’m using it every day…

    My usual response:
You can place the route on a CC Sphere or Cylinder layer to give it some tremendous personality. It can look rather like a missile trajectory if you’re not careful but this gives you a curved shadow, too.

You can animate the line with lots of different matte fillers such as light glints, radio waves, barber pole cycling animation, lightning bolts and others.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I’m surprised no one mentioned the stroke or write-on effects. With these you simply make a motion path (with the pen tool that normally makes masks) along the route you want and then it pretty much does the rest for you. Check out Aharon’s tutorials on animating a signature.
