Animating 640 slices without a headache
Hi all –
thanks to a tip on here I’ve got a great script that chops up a large image into 32 x 20 pieces for me.
I purchased a ‘Matrix’ script but it’s hanging the PC (maybe too many pieces).
So, is there a way to animate these using an expression maybe? What I’m trying to do is scatter the pieces (in x,y,z) then bring them all back together in there original position. It’s a mosaic image so the final position important.
I tried wiggle-animating the null they were all attached to, but it affected all pieces the same way, giving just 1 random movement to the entire set.
Or is there another plugin/method that would do this?

You might want to try Card Dance – it may not have the accuracy you need, but it could be worth a try:

I think there’s the ability to use a custom layer to create your “dance”, so you might need to use a gray scale version of your image to achieve it.

Seems like AE’s Shatter effect would do the trick. It’s a little cumbersome to use, and to get it in reverse I think you’ll actually have to precomp and time remap, but it will let you scatter slices of an image.

Can you describe in more detail precisely how you want this to look?

The only thing I’m now stumbling with is motion blur isnt rendering.. I’ve clicked it on, on all comps, everywhere I can. Any ideas?

Motion blur only works on things that are actually moving (i.e., have animated transform properties or are seen by a moving camera). With Card Dance, the layer isn’t really moving.
If Card Dance doesn’t have a motion blur option, try adding the CC Force Motion Blur effect.
