  • Animating 3D objects in After Effects

    Hi All,

Not sure how this works so an explanation would be most appreciated. Let’s say I import a 3d tank model into AE. Obviously, the tank is still and not animated (the treads of the tank do not move). Can I animate the treads somehow in After Effects so it appears the tank is moving? Can I rotate the turret or is all of that done only in a 3D program. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

I read your post below. You need a 3D application for this and then composite that into AE. Do yourself a favor get some training, because if you need to ask a question like this there is a lot you need to learn before tackling a project like compositing a realistic 3d modal in a scene.

    Mr. Hoffman,

Thank you for your response. Not only do I agree with your post but all that comes to mind is a resounding “of course!” as it pertains to training. Yes, I am new at this but also like to know where to gear my efforts which you have helped to answer.

    Thank you.

AE CS4 allows you to import Photoshop “3d” objects into AE with limited functionality.

Once imported from Photoshop, you can tumble-around the object in 3d, animate 3d position & rotation, etc. using the null that is attached to the layer.

However, you do not have the ability to cast shadows, use lights, and the higher-quality rendering may be slow on some machines.
Also, if your object has multiple parts, such as a tank turret, you cannot control that separately unless you bring that in as a sepparate 3d object and place it on top of your tank body, and … well you get the idea.
It can get needlessly complicated very quick.

Here is a quick overview video of this process from Lynda.com I found using a quick google search:

    Enjoy:)
