  • Animated texture previews and low res rendering

    Hi Guys,

Wondering if someone might be able to help me here.

Basically I have a 3d character with animated texture face. As he talks the face animates (the face movie is done in AE and rendered as a quicktime).

My problem is I’m rendering a complicated scene through vray, with long render times. I need to render the entire animation frequently to show the client and for the audio to be added. Therefore I need to render a low res version (preview quality it fine) but with the animated texture playing on the face.

What would be the best way to render this, baring in mind I’m using vray?

I thought maybe I could render as viewport, bout not sure if this would show the texture animating?

    Thanks guys!

Ps…It would also be ideal if I could see the animated texture play in the viewport, rather than having to click reload on the texture everytime – so that I can sync it with the audio. any ideas for that?

Rendering as viewport would work. The material will animate in the editor if you go to the material’s “editor” tab and check the “Animate Preview” tab.

    thanks for your reply.
Thats great for rendering through advanced render, but is there an equivalent for vray materials? I can’t an animate preview in the vray material. Hopefully I’m just missing it somewhere.
    Any ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks again

Ah — VRay! I think you’re out of luck there. Probably a question for the VRayForC4D forum.

With Vray1.1, at least, you can use regular Cinema materials.
So for editing you can have the animated Cinema material, either on
your subject or maybe just on a dummy object visible to the camera.
Then for rendering use the VrayMat only.

So the theory goes, but in my experience native materials are completely blown out unless you turn the lights waaay down.

Ah ha, I see what Lennart means. Use a Cinema 4d native material for the animated face texture, then render it as the viewport. Native cinema 4d materials only get blown out when you do the full GI render through vray. Then for the final render, switch the native material for the proper vray material.

Great stuff guys – many thanks
