Hey guys, fairly new to After Effects and was working on Dean Velez’s Animated Stroke tutorial here:
    https://www.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=2&page=/articles/velez_dean/glowing_stroke/index.html

I have two questions actually, one a ‘help me understand what this is doing’ question and one ‘how do i do this’ question.

On the ‘step 1’ comp I understand that the Start and End keyframes on the stroke are what’s causing the line to animate, but after some playing I’m having a hard time figuring out the exact relation of the keyframes and their percentages to the stroke’s animation. can anyone give me a bit of insight there?

I’d like to do a similar effect but with a white background and a colored stroke but that doesn’t seem to work. I can create the first part of the stroke fine, but when I create the second comp the stroke completely disappears when I apply the Echo effect. Any ideas there? Thanks.

Ok, got the start/end thing figured out but still have no clue why the Echo effect isn’t working with a colored stroke. Any insight there? thanks.

Did you try changing the “echo operator” within the effect’s controls? Methinks “add” over a white BG is the problem.

Think that may be it Steve, thought i had played with those but it looks like setting to ‘minimum’ gets me at least close to the desired effect. Thanks.
