I’m doing some animated Gifs with text only. Black Text with alpha channel. This is for a website. I want the text only against whatever background is in the webpage. Trouble is when I put it on the page(using Frontpage) I get white pixels here and there around the text. And when it fades it fades to white first then into the background. Are my settings wrong or is this inherent with animated GIFs?
    I’m using AE 6.5

I think I answered my on question.
Instead of using premultiplied in the color setting in the render queue I used straight(unmatted). This seemed to fix the problem. But I was expecting better quality nonetheless. It breaks into dots as it fades. Weird. It must be a “GIF” thing.

GIF’s are palette based (max. 256 colors) and don’t contain any alpha channels. Transparency is generated by assigning one of the palette colors a special index and the application displaying the file needs to make sure it uses this info. What you are seeing is dithering (a semi-transparent pixel will be forced to become either completely transparent or completely opaque). so yes, it’s a “GIF thing”, but it has never been different. One tip: Do not create your GIFs in AE – it isn’t very good at optimizing the color palette. Instead export a Quicktime Movie and then import this movie into ImageReady. You will have much more adjustment options there and everything will look much nicer.
