I’ve got a 3D animation of piping being added to an existing building (exciting I know). I’ve got one animation without the piping and one with the piping and have an animated mask that makes the piping appear to grow into existance. The ‘growing’ edge of the piping is very boring though and I want some kind of colored fuzzyness – like acid eating away the piping (only in reverse). I have no idea what I would use to get this effect though – or how to make it only effect the growing edge of the pipes and not the whole edge of the mask. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hard to know where to start but here’s one way, there are dozens of others.

    1. Create a comp that is, say, 1000 pixels square.
    2. Create a solid that is, say, 1000 by 500 pixels. Make it white.
    3. Apply any effect you want to the solid to make the edges wiggle or pixelate or blur or get fuzzy or turn colors.
    4. Precompose.
    5. Bring the precomp into your pipe comp and use it as a track matte to reveal the pipes. You wanted the matte comp to be so large so you can move it around.

Much easier to show you than to explain it.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
