animate seasonal snowfall on map
I am working on a map and need to animate the seasonal advance of the mountain snowpack as it starts on the peaks in November and moves to the valleys in December. I have a good Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the area. Can you advise? Thanks in advance.

You can use the map with height information as a track matte for the snow layer. Animate, say, a Threshold effect (with some blurring and maybe Fractal Noise overlaid) to reveal the snow.

Using the DEM I’ve tried two methods
1) I made stills of the levels of elevation, colored them white and animated them on the timeline, fading/blending in progression.
2) I imported the DEM, set mode to lighten, went to Effects>color correction.levels and animated levels (especially gamma). This worked but was tricky and left color edges .
Is there a simpler way to do the second method?
