Maybe the subject is not very clear… I have this drawing in Illustrator that represents a layer of phospholipids:

Is there a way to animate this thing as if a wave was going through it? (Without distorting the single elements).

If you have individual elements, you can use something like this: https://motionscript.com/design-guide/elastic.html or this: https://motionscript.com/mastering-expressions/follow-the-leader.html to animate the first one moving up and down and then the rest will move in reaction to it.

Otherwise, there’s going to be some distortion. However, it might be acceptable. You can use the Reshape effect, Bezier Warp, or (probably the best option) a third party effect called BAO Boa.
