Andrew’s 3D Light streaks tutorial
Posted by Malcolm Desoto on October 18, 2007 at 6:19 pmThis one:
https://library.creativecow.net/articles/kramer_andrew/nano.phpHe uses Trapcode Particular to emit the the light streak. Unfortunately, I do not have Trapcode and can’t drop $300 bucks to get it.
Can this effect be done with any of the other Particle generators that come with AE7?
Thanks.

October 18, 2007 at 6:43 pmit’s been a while since i viewed andrew’s light streak tutorial…. but you may be able to produce something similar with cc particle world. it is a 3d particle system too and will interact correctly with ae’s 3d comp camera.
with particle world you can define a custom particle from the particle type pulldown (‘textured’ anything means custom), then pick the texture layer.
getting the movement of the emitter (or producer) will be different… particle world has position broken up into 3 separate parameters (one each for x, y, z). and the values are not in pixels…
i think it could work…

October 18, 2007 at 6:45 pmYou might want to check out some of Aharon Rabinowitz tutorials. He has one recent one where in CS3 he combines the puppet tool with a CC particle effect that could lead the results your looking for. I know I saw one tutorial where, though it would require much longer render time, the effect could be achieved with one of the CC plug-ins (comes standard with your install) and some sort of time displace or repeat aspect.
Maltaannon’s extrude tutorial could also lead to a solution. -

October 18, 2007 at 6:59 pmThanks Kevin and Ken.
I’ll try out CC Particle world.
Unfortunately, I don’t have CS3 yet Kevin. So, no puppet tool for me. I’ll take a look at all the other tutorials you mentioned though.
Thanks!

October 18, 2007 at 11:11 pmI think the key is being able to choose a light as your emitter. With all of the other particle generators, you are only able to select “layers”. So, no luck so far.

October 22, 2007 at 6:15 pmisn’t the light used just for emitter position (with a wiggle expression) in 3d space?
could you apply a wiggle expression to the cc particle world producer position parameters?
you could also attach the producer position properties to a 3d null’s (or light’s) respective properties… however since particle world is not is pixels and cooridinates are zeroed on center of the layer, there will be some conversion calculating to do via expressions when you link them together.
