Ancient Final Cut Pro with 7d.
Hey everyone,
I am a bit of a novice, have just bought a 7d and would really appreciate some help.
I’ve been sniffing around the net trying to find out the easiest way to get the 7d’s H.264 video files into a suitable format for editing in Final Cut Pro 4 HD (which is the copy I have). From the research I have done it seems like I want to be working with a codec called Prores(?), but I fear my early copy of FCP doesn’t support this.
Is there any other codec suitable for this early version of FCP that would deal well with the 7d footage?

You’re right, your version does not support this. You will need to get MPEG STREAMCLIP (free), and convert the footage to DVCPRO HD…the HD version your software does support.

You could work DVCPRO HD, but now you’d be transcoding a full raster format into a thin raster format. Your 7D footage is already very compressed, so that’s a route that would probably work but you really should upgrade to at the very least, Final Cut Pro 6.

ProRes is the best i-frame codec ever.
