I have an upcoming project that will shoot in HDV and dvc pro HD and needs to finish in uncompressed 4X3 SD. I can capture into FCP through Decklink HD via SDI from my camera and crop in FCP. I can switch to a Kona LH card and crop during capture (?) via SDI from the camera or capture via component and edge crop with my HDV deck. I will also have dv100 footage and a rented 1200a with SDI for capturing that material. What

    Vince,

Many people ask this question here every week and everyone asks how to to achieve the best quality (as if anyone would ever want anything less), and no one ever mentions whether they might actually want to have a finished HD version of their project stored away for safe keeping just in case they wind up with a masterpeice. Personally, I would never shoot in any form of HD if I never intended to create an HD master, its just a big waste of time and resources.

In any case, if all you want is a final SD master, then capture everything through your Kona card in 8-bit uncompressed SD and be done with it. If you want all options available to you, then capture everything through your Kona card as DVCPro100, edit in HD and downconvert to SD when you’re done using your Kona card. Its pretty simple.

    david,

thx. i have done endless searching here and around the web and found a multitude of answers. i’m looking for the most concise one. the hd/hdv acquisition is a directive. i also have d-beta color corrected film layoffs and dv50 4×3 footage i have to deal with. i just need to get to 4X3 non letterbox for all of it when I’m done. i guess that is why i never considered doing it all hd. that and all the revisions that will be screened in SD. it’s just feels less complicated to me to get it into the format that it’s going to be used for immeditely.

    Gotcha Vince,

In that case, just capture everything to 8 or 10-bit uncompressed (depending on your drive speed) via the Kona card and edit. That way all your graphics will be great and all your video will be as good as can be in the SD world.
