    Hi,

new here. I use Sony Vegas for video editing, and have just completed shooting a rather ambitious short film project, most of which was against greenscreen.

Sony Vegas’ Chroma Keying facility isn’t that great, so I’ve tried experimenting with Adobe After Effects 6.5. I have to use Vegas to render the HD footage as an AVI, so that I can use it in AE.

Now, here’s my problem. When I import the High-Definition AVI into AE6.5, it squashes it horizontally, by about half. The keying facility on AE is wonderful, so I’m trying to re-render the AE-keyed footage back to HD AVI, so that I may continue editing in Vegas, but AE seems to squash all the footage.

Is there any way I can tell AE what size and shape I want the footage to be? This is the first time I’ve ever used AE, so please forgive me if I seem a little naive about the basics!

    Thanks for your help,

    Ron Stirling

does the footage look squished when you bring it back into vegas, or just in ae’s preview window?

if it is just in ae’s preview, then every thing that dave says is correct. i could also add that you could use a square pixel hd comp setting, which will expand the footage out nicely (w/o jaggies), but if vegas is expecting the same pixel count and pixel aspect ratio, then you’re probably better off leaving it in it’s native form…

if the problem is when you bring it back into vegas, then there are probably two options… one, set your ae comp to use a square pixel hd comp setting. two, check the import settings to see if you can make the correction there.

    Hi,

I’m still having trouble with this one, I’m afraid, so I’ll explain exactly what I’m trying to do…

I have filmed an actor against greenscreen, using my Sony Handycam HDR SR5. recording in 1440×1080 Hi-Def, and in X.V. Colour. I’m editing the film with Sony Vegas, which has a below-par keying facility, so what I need to do is reapply the greenscreen with a flatter, more even green.

So, as the Sony camera records files in the AVCHD format, I use Vegas to re-render the video as AVI, so that I can work with the footage in After Effects. But, when I load up the footage in After Effects, the image is squashed vertically. I want the 16:9 ratio to remain intact, how do I do that?

I also want to key away the greenscreen, and rerender the footage with a flatter green underneath, so that Vegas can key is more easily.

Can anyone help me out? I’ve never used After Effects before, so please dumb it right down for me!

    Thanks

    Ron

    Hi,

someone did mention this switch before, but where is it? Nothing you hover over has “pop-up” text, explaining what it is. What does this switch look like?

    Thanks,

    Ron

    Ok,

    I’ve placed an image of my Comp window at this link;

    https://www.ronstirling.co.uk/comp_1.jpg

…as you can see, there are no switches along the bottom, which was why I was asking you to identify where it is?

    Thanks,

Have you “Interpret footage” (pixels aspect, size,..) properly?
Do your Composition have the same parameters than your footage?

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

That’s the thing, I really don’t know if I am doing ANYTHING properly! I’ve never used After Effects before.

I need someone to explain how I go about importing 1440×1080 hi-def AVI into AE6.5, and having the pixel ratio correct in the preview, and also how to render the footage back out of AE6.5 for use in Sony Vegas.

You don’t have to worry about the preview.
What is important is that AE knows exactly the kind of footage that is dealing with: Size, Time-base, Field-order and Pixels aspect.
You need to set your Composition with the same parameters. When you will export from AE your movie will fit in your Vegas project.
As David says, you can change the aspect of the Preview window.
