Anamorphic pixel ratio issues
I’ve imported some DV PAL Widescreen footage (pixel aspect ratio 1.42) into an avi. When playing the original file on a media player it renders as widescreen fine, however after exporting from either Premier or After Effects (both v6.5), it renders as square pixels – distorting the image. How do I tag the file when exporting to ensure that it will be interpretted by players and other software to render with the correct pixel aspect ratio (1.42)?
NB: In After Effects I have set the PAR in composition settings to D1/DV PAL Widescreen (1.42), ditto for the export movie settings in Premier, but it doesn’t appear to help.

I remember having to manually interpret widescreen footage
pixel ratio’s but that was in Premiere 6.5Not sure if pro interprets in properly on import. does it
look right when editing?I could be wrong but I don’t think any .avi player can
format anamorphic footage like that. It’s something
thats done only with DVD playback.If it has to be played back on computer you have to render
it in a 4:3 comp and have it letter box, or if its a quicktime you

If I crop in a 4:3 comp, then I’ll loose vertical lines of resolution though yes?
The final output will be to a DVD, however the main issue is getting it to be interpreted as 16:9 in Final Cut Pro (I’m performing some editing and all effects in Premier Pro and Affter Effects (both v6.5) on a PC and then handing off to the primary editor who’s working with Final Cut Pro on a Mac). When they import the original captured footage in either AVI or MOV format, it interprets it as 16:9 (anamorphic – PAR 1.42). But when he gets the footage that I’ve exported, it sees it as non anamorphic (square PAR).
I’ve tried mannually interpretting the PAR in Premier (it seems to get it right automatically in AE), but it doesn’t make any difference. Nore does any of the playing around I’ve done so far with the export settings.
Windows Media Player 10 definitely interprets the original footage as 16:9 (PAR 1.42), but other players see it as 4:3 (square PAR).

cropping would not lose vertical rez as you would be
cropping out the black from the formatting in a 4:3 comp.
in a 16:9 comp it fills the screen but looks vertically elongated.I can tell you this much, if you print out to a DV tape
with the export/comp/project/whatever set for DV Widescreen
with a pixel aspect of 1.2, then capture that in FCP
and interpret it as DV Widescreen (1.2) it will definitely
work. -
Excellent, thanks for your help in this. I believe I’ve found another way to interpret the footage in Final Cut (altering the anamorphic flag).
