i’ve got a scene of a city street with a car driving down it.
rather than render the city for each frame (which doesn’t change) is there a way to render a still of the city, then render the car and it’s shadow separately?
the shadow needs to interact with the bumps and whatnot of the street…. but i don’t need the street itself, just the shadow with an alpha channel.
is this possible with some sort of tags?
    thanks!

    CBB,
There are a couple of ways to do this. Most will involve the compositing tag and alpha channels or object buffer.
You can do a pass with just the city and shadow from the car, then render a still of the car with alpha and composite the two in After Effects or FCP.
place the composite tag on the car and uncheck seen by rays.
You can do the reverse by rendering a still of the city and rendering the car and shadow then composite. Place composite tag on city uncheck seen by rays.
    Render with straight alpha.

    thanks for the responses!
    i’m still having a bit of trouble…
yeah, i’m compositing in AfterEffects- i’ve got the still of the city background. all i need is the car with an alpha and it’s shadow.
what should the tag settings be to make the street ‘invisible’ except for the car’s shadow? and does the car need a tag, other than ‘object buffer’?
    thanks again for the help!
    cheers
