An interesting bug in FCP 5…
I had been having problems with rendered sections of the timeline lately. I could render the whole timeline, and when I launched FCP5 again later, some of the files would no longer be rendered – they’d have a red line above them. Then I finally discovered the pattern. If a source file exists in two places, this causes the problem. Any clips that were rendered at the same time as the clip that existed in two places were also affected. In my most recent case, I had downloaded a clip of stock footage to my desktop. I then copied this clip to the Terrablock hard drive in our facility. I left the copy that was on my desktop there. So the clip was on the Terrablock and my internal system drive. I imported the clip into FCP5 from the Terrablock and used it in the timeline with some effects on it. I rendered it along with a few other clips. I saved the project and quit the program. When I relaunched the project, the clips that had been rendered were no longer rendered. This issue has cropped up several times recently, mostly because I was copying footage from my FW800 drive to the Terrablock, so a few clips were existing in two places. Wierd. Anyone know why this happens?
My system consists of:
G5 tower – 4GB of RAM
AJA Kona LH
LaCie FW800 HD
Facilis Terrablock (shared fibre channel storage) -

You should never have the same media in two places on a system. FCP does system wide search for media everytime you open it up and though it should always find the actual source you referred to in the project, it may choose the first one it comes to.
Whenever I do a transfer of media from one drive to another, or from desktop to drive, I either eject the other drive, or delete the media from the desktop.
