  • An easy one – How to render NTSC wide (1.2) project for web use

Posted by Gary Foster on March 28, 2008 at 2:49 am

    Hello,
I have what I hope is an easy question. I have an AE project that uses widescreen DV. The entire project is in NTSC widescreen PAR. I typically dump these straight to DVD for distribution so I never worried about pixel aspect ratios before. Now I’m starting to post projects on a website which means square pixels are used. So, how do I render my 1.2 PAR comp so it displays correctly on the web?
My best guess is to use the stretch checkbox when I render and put it to 854X480. Is that the right approach or am I missing something?

    Thanks

    Gary

The square pixel dimensions for widescreen DV is 864×480. Create an 864×480 comp, drop in your footage and stretch horizontally to fit.

    Yep.

    Why 864, not 853?
Because DV is D1 with 3 pixels lopped off the top and 3 off the bottom.
D1 widescreen is 864×486, which is 16×9 proportion if you divide each dimension by 54.
So. Lop 6 pixels off and you have 864×480.

To rephrase: DV comes from D1, so when calculating 16×9, start with D1 height (486) to get 864 width, then remove 6 pixels from the height. Don’t start with 480 height then calculate 16×9 from there to get 853 or 854. It just ain’t right.

Thanks for the response guys! One more question though.. Will creating the 864X480 comp and dropping in my 1.2 PAR comp give me the same results as stretching using render options? I used the stretch option during render yesterday and some of my title text (that was in 1.2 PAR) came out rough. Then again… I did stretch to 854 and not 864.

    Thanks,
    Gary

The best way to preserve the quality of your composition is to drop it into a DV Widescreen Square Pixel composition (864×480) and enable collapse transformations on the nested composition (any text/vector objects will then be rasterized in the parent/final composition and maintain sharpness). I don’t think you should need to scale the nested comp at all, but if you do use Layer > Transform > Fit to Comp Width.
