I just had a new PC built from what I thought were good components.

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200, 4 GB of OCZ Platinum RAM,G-Force 6800 GT, ASUS 8N-SLI Premium MOBO, and 2 Maxtor Diamond MAX 10 on a RAID 0.

On a clean install of XP Pro and After Effects 7 any renders over 30 seconds begin to show artifacts. Blue screens are common occurances. This never happened on my P4.

The machine has been in the shop for 3 weeks now and the vendor claims to have tested all components and determined this is a software issue.

Are there any known issues with the Athlon / After Effects or any of these components?

    Hi Brian,

I’d be curious to know if the artifacts and crashes happen while you are using OpenGL. And are you running XP64? I am running into the same probelms with my GeForce 7800GTX.(with Dual-dual opteron 285’s) I have had to simply go to turning off OpenGL or jumping back into 6.5.

It is frustrating after having high hopes for new equipment. Seems like there is no way around this right now either.

I’m not running XP64. I’ll play with OpenGL settings and see if that makes a difference.

If this is a common issue perhaps the changes in the Render Engine are the culprit.

I won’t be able to test OpenGL until I retrieve my machine from the shop.

The artifacts I’m getting look like random additional rows of pixels ( 1 or 2 px high) that push the video up or down to accomodate these in intruders.

We have a system very similar to yours,

Athlon dual core 4200 with a 7800gt and the systems works very well, no problems at all.

Have you tried a differn’t video card. Have lates video card drivers? What makes you think it’s the processor and not something else?

Also could be bad ram? try just 2 gigs and see what happens. I’ve run into issues where the ram boots up but that the ram generates errors during render.

Also what about lates motherboard drivers, this is very important! As well as athlon dual cores have an update over at the tech page:
    https://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_9706,00.html
Use the one that matches your windows version.

also windows has a dual core hotfix that may improve speed…

    Good luck,
    Andrew

thanks for your comments. I’ve had the RAM tested using MEM test, the test ran for 6 days and did not show an errror. All other components check out fine.
